June 15, 2011HOLT COUNTY, MO | By: Wayman
Emergency operators in Holt county have launched a sandbagging effort on a levee west of Big Lake.
They are concentrating on a 400 foot stretch of the district number 10 levee, but repeating their warning to nearby residents to be prepared to evacuate. Holt County Emergency Management reports 11 roads are closed in areas near Missouri River levees both in Missouri and Iowa. Officials are cautioning sightseers to stay away from levees, saying driving or walking on them can create even more instability with the heavy water already pushing against them. They say the Missouri Highway Patrol is stepping up security patrols in Holt county, and Army National Guard soldiers are also assisting in emergency protective measures.
