KANSAS CITY, MO (2011-06-30)
The Missouri Department of Transportation is urging drivers to cross the Missouri River in the Kansas City area rather than on bridges farther north, where flooding has been prominent.
Beth Wright, MoDOT's state maintenance engineer, says travelers heading east of west across the river should use one of about 10 bridges in the Kansas City area. She also advises checking the department's Traveler Information Map for updates on flooding and roadways. Wright says as of today the only bridges over the Missouri still open north of Kansas City are located on U.S. 36 at St. Joseph and Missouri 92 south of Weston, which crosses into Leavenworth, Kansas. But she said both of those roads could have delays. Several bridges remain open in the Kansas City area.
