Conception Lawsuit

The Catholic Abbey at Conception faces a lawsuit, after an unnamed Missouri man alleges officials there covered up sexual abuse by a priest in the late 1980's.

The suit, filed in Maryville, claims Bede Parry, also a boy's choir director at the Abbey and a secretary to the former Abbot, had sexual contact with a minor during a summer church camp in 1987. The lawsuit alleges officials at the Abbey at the time knew of Parry's previous molestations of other students but kept it quiet. In an extensive interview with the Kansas City Star, Parry is quoted as admitting most of the allegations in the lawsuit are true, adding great harm was done. He tells the media he had three relationships at Conception Abbey in the 1970's and another at a Minnesota Abbey. He's also been treated at a church-based sexual offender treatment facility in New Mexico shortly after the 1987 sexual contact at Conception was alleged to have happened. Parry resigned as an Episcopalian priest in Las Vegas yesterday after the lawsuit was filed.
