Missouri Western Drowning

Authorities have identified the victim of an apparent drowning at pool on the Missouri Western campus in St. Joseph.

Derico Morris was a sophomore from St. Louis and was pulled from the swimming pool in the Looney Complex yesterday afternoon. A lifeguard had noticed Morris underwater about 12 feet of water in the pool's deep end, pulled him out, and gave him CPR. Morris was rushed to Heartland Medical Center in St. Joseph, but died a few hours later. He was 22. Morris was a student supervisor for the campus office of housing and residential life's summer operation. Missouri Western officials call Morris' death a tragedy and say campus counselors are available for anyone who needs to visit. The pool will be closed until Monday.
