May 27, 2011HOLT COUNTY, MO | By: Wayman
Holy county authorities are keeping a close watch on the Missouri River that's flooding, but says the flood-prone big lake area is not under an evacuation order and is expected to be open to visitors over the Memorial Day holiday.
The county commission tells us Holt County Emergency Operations Center is monitoring it, but as of now there has been no state of emergency declared. Holt county officials say the floods in the area historically rise slowly, giving residents plenty of time to prepare, and on Wednesday did issue a notice advising residents of big lake to plan ahead. The Missouri is already about 4 feet above flood stage and the US Army Corps of engineers say they are anticipating the river stage to be from 3 to 6 feet above flood stage for the next month. Again, officials are monitoring, but say the Big Lake State Park is open and prepared to accept visitors for the holiday weekend.
