A chemical spill leaking from a train forced a precautionary evacuation last night southwest of St. Joseph.
It happened around the Lewis and Clark Village and closed down the Intersection of State Highway 45 and US Highway 59, which takes drivers west to Atchison or south to Iatan. Buchanan County Emergency manager bill brinton issued a mandatory evacuation within a quarter mile of the spill as a precaution, but said last night no one was found in the homes involved in that area. He says a passing train noticed the leaking car on the other train which was then re-routed to a spur line. Traffic from both highways was kept away for several hours as a Haz-Mat crew from Olathe Kansas arrived on the scene to clean up the spill, which Brinton said was believed to be hydrochloric acid. No injuries were reported from the spill.
