Copper Thefts

A rash of copper thefts in St. Joseph has police issuing warnings to property owners.

Copper prices remain high, which is why police say the thefts are happening from air conditioning units across the city. In come cases the entire air conditioner unit is taken. Recent victims include Dollar General, the St. Joseph Museum, Pear Atomic Bait and McCarthy Baptist Church. St. Joseph Police captain Kevin castle says the spike in thefts come down to supply and demand. Castle says it's unfortunate many AC units are behind houses and buildings where they are less visible but suggests using protective barriers around them to protect them from copper thieves.
