Corn growers should start scouting their corn fields for black cut worms.
THere have been two intensive moth flights this year, and given the dates of the flights, May 4 and May 13 are the dates to scout. According to the extension's regional agronomist in Holt Conty ,Wayne Flanary, cut worms won't be seen over all fields, but there are certain places that have a high potential for black cut worms. Flanary adds there are preventative treatments available for black cut worms; But does not recommend these treatments be used. Since the black cut worm does not cover every acre of the field, it is better to scout for the worm and to treat the corn once the worm has been found. Statewide trapping of insect pests can be viewed on the MU IPM pest monitoring network website.
