Implementing a hotel/motel tax was a prominent discussion at the recent board of Alderman meeting in Mound City.
Alderman Seitz reported that cities with a population under 7,500 can implement the tax for purposes other than just promoting tourism, such as capital improvements and general revenue, provided it is presented that way on the ballot. Aldermen voted to pursue putting the issue on a future ballot, and are working on potential wording for such a measure. The hiring of a full time police officer was also among the topics discussed at the meeting. Chief Panning has received 13 applications for a full-time position and 4 applications for a part-time position. Panning reported he has the applicants narrowed down to four possible candidates. Also among discussion was the grant for a patrol vehicle. Clerk Smith reported that she has contacted Jeremy Brady, of USDA Rural Development, about applying for a grant for a patrol vehicle. Brady is concerned about any excess funds in the general revenue account that are not designated for a specific purpose which could disqualify Mound City for a grant.
