Hiawatha Meeting

Code enforcement efforts are ramping up in Hiawatha.

The code enforcement department told the city commissioner's they wrote nearly 600 letters to nuisance properties last year. That was 323 more than the year before. The department says many residents who received letters used to complain the city was "Picking" on them but with the increased numbers officials believe the word is spreading that code enforcers are monitoring all of Hiawatha. Police Chief Evans Woehlecke also told the commission he thought the extra code enforcement was helping bring down crime as well pointing to a 59% drop in incident reports last year from 2009.
