Early literacy has become a growing goal among organizations in the Maryville community.
Maryville Public Library director, Stephanie Patterson, emphasizes how early literacy development is important for children before they even begin pre-school. The Maryville Public Library has partnered with the early care and Education Lab center at Northwest Missouri State University to take on the task of promoting early literacy, particularly in low-income families. So far a parent education series has been planned and a book drive will collect materials that can be loaned to the "Head Start" program. The library is also seeks to raise funds in order to award scholarships to low-income, out of town families who can't afford the fee required to obtain a library card.
