Feb. 1, 2011ST. JOSEPH, MO | By: Wayman
The St. Joseph Police Department says Jason Hailey from St. Joseph left the Imperial Gas Station onto Patee Street towards 7th Street just before noon on Sunday. Police say they noticed a traffic violation and tried to stop him. Instead, they say he fled, driving through a stop sign and entering an intersection at 9th and Patee in St. Joseph. That's where Hailey's vehicle crashed into a second vehicle driven by Kim Wadlington from Illinois. She was not hurt. Hailey and his passenger, Amy Carroll of St. Joseph, had to be extricated from their vehicle. Carroll was pronounced dead at the hospital. As of yesterday afternoon Hailey remained in critical condition. Police say drugs or alcohol were likely a factor in the crash. They have also determined the speeding vehicle had been stolen from the St. Joseph's hospital parking lot in early January and the plates on it at the time of the crash were also stolen. Hailey was also wanted on a parole violation on drug delivery charges. Investigators have reviewed the dash-board camera in the police cruiser and say all actions by the Police Department are deemed to be appropriate with policies. No charges have been filed yet in connection to the crash investigation.
