Fertilizer Application

Regional agronomist Wayne Flanary says long term research suggests ammonia works best when put down as the soil temperature reaches 50 degrees. In our region, that is usually not until thanksgiving time. He also says using N-serve with ammonia slows down the conversion of the chemical to nitrate. He adds about 55% nitrogen is taken up in corn plant tasseling with the remainder being used for ear fill suggesting sufficient amount of nitrogen should be available to the plant through the grain fill.
