Smoke Ban Starts

Going into effect October 1st, the city will prohibit smoking in Maryville within 10 feet of all public entrances and open windows, within 10 feet of bleachers and grandstands, and in all public playgrounds, trailer parks, and apartment complexes. Terri Harr is with the group "Citizens for a Smoke-Free Nodaway County" which helped get the ban passed by the Maryville City Council. Her group has been busy the last few months educating businesses on the smoke-free ordinance, and says Maryville's policy could eventually have a state wide impact. Private homes in Maryville are exempt from the ban, but houses used as businesses such as day care or health care still fall under the ban. Violations include fines up to $500 and up to 3 months in jail.
