Police chief Christopher Connally says patrol officer Dan DeKraai had just finished a practice exercise with the department's tactical unit at the former neely school when another officer accidently shot him in the back. He was pronounced dead at heartland regional in St. Joseph. The chief says it happened while officers were taking a break after the training had ended. He says it was accidental and between the two officers as they were demonstrating techniques to one another. Chief Connally says standard safety procedures appear not to have been followed. The chief says officer DeKraai has been with the department just more than 5 years. He says the St. Joseph police department is devastated at the death saying it's a great loss to both the city and a personal loss to the police department.
