That's why activists on both sides are concerned time is running out for new food safety regulations to receive senate debate. The federal food safety modernization act would drastically impact the way food is monitored including adding more rules for food producers. Food poisoning attorney Bill Marler says even small producers who sell to larger operations would be effected. But Garret Hawkins with the Missouri farm bureau says small producers should be exempt. Leading democratic lawmakers are pushing for the federal food modernization act's passage this year.
