HIAWATHA, KS (2009-09-18) The Hiawatha City Commissioners turn down a second request to allow residents to keep chickens in town.
Carol Jones asked the City again for permission to have chickens, and even brought testimony from those supporting her. However a Municipal City Code adopted in 2007 keeps residents from raising chickens. Hiawatha's Mayor told Jones if they bent the rules for her they'd have to allow others to have chickens, and the concern is that others wouldn't keep their operation as clean as she would. There will be no changes to the Code. And discussions continue regarding a possible county-wide fire district to answer in-equity of tax payments and fire protection. The Hiawatha and Padonia Townships and Hiawatha are all planning a possible agreement.
