Hiawatha City

City commissioners are exploring options to replace its aging fire truck… the one large enough to reach structures not near a fire hydrant and the same vehicle that goes on every fire run and even used by the street and sewer departments to unplug storm lines.

The Hiawatha Fire Department has applied for a grant and awaiting that decision.

Another option is a lease purchase of 30 thousand dollars a year for 10 years.

A new 4-wheel drive fire truck costs just under 2 hundred thousand dollars.

City officials are also looking to see if they can find a used one to purchase.

Also at the last meeting the commission got an update on the skate park, which the task force has raised nearly 26 thousand dollars. There's also a 20 thousand dollar pledge from the Hiawatha Kiwanis Foundation.

Part of the cost of the park will go toward ongoing maintenance.
