Beetle Danager

But Conservation officials are warning traveling campers not to pack firewood.

That's because a small metallic green beetle called the Emerald Ash Borer overwinters in the interior of ash wood.

This insect has killed millions of ash trees in several other states and one infestation was discovered last year in Wayne County Missouri.

Cindy Garner is a forester with the Missouri Department of Conservation and says if the insect spreads in Missouri it could have a widespread economic impact by locking down our county.

State parks this summer are hanging purple triangular traps high in the treetops that are designed specifically for the Emerald Ash Borer.

Signs are also being posted not to move firewood.
